Home IS MRI SAFE?
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam is a non-invasive, painless way to produce diagnostic images without exposure to radiation. Its ability to produce a cross section of high-quality images of your body’s internal organs and structures make it one of the most versatile imaging techniques available. Over 60 million MRI exams are performed globally each year, and there are no known health hazards from temporary exposure to the machine.
An MRI is comprised of a large, circular, and very powerful magnet with an open space in the middle. During your exam, you will lie on a cushioned platform, and the part of your body being scanned will be placed within the middle of the magnet.
When the exam begins, the body part being imaged is slowly moved into the middle of the magnet. You will be asked to hold very still, as movement results in the blurring of images. The magnet then begins to work, using radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce high-quality images of your body. Depending on what is being imaged, you may be asked to hold your breath for up to 30 seconds.
The duration of the exam varies, but it usually takes between 25-40 minutes per body part.
Due to the powerful magnets used in an MRI, it may cause metal in your body to move. Before an MRI can be performed all internal metal objects will need to be confirmed as safe. A technologist will ask screening questions to ensure you don’t have any internal metal, metal on your body, or will verify if an internal medical device is certified as MRI safe. A private change room will be provided, as well as a locker to safely store your personal items.
During an MRI, the internal part of the magnet produces repetitive tapping, thumping and other noises. For your comfort, you will be provided with headphones, or ear plugs to reduce the noise. Mayfair’s MRI machine utilises SILENT Scan software that helps reduce noise by up to 99 percent. You will also be given an emergency call bell that you can press at any point to stop the exam if you start to feel too uncomfortable.
Mayfair uses two magnets from GE Healthcare: The Optima MR450w 1.5T and the Signa Architect 3T, which are wide bore scanners, and bring qualities from both closed and open bore scanners. Their bore space measures 70 cm (about 2 feet) giving patients some extra room to feel more comfortable without sacrificing image quality. The closed bore helps to identify areas of concern and scan faster than open MRI machines.
To produce high-quality images, you must lie very still inside the machine, which can feel claustrophobic. The scanner is well lit and well ventilated, and you can remain in contact with your technologist during the exam. Our machines use Advanced motion correction that allows you to breathe freely during most of your exam, except where breath hold imaging is required. Wearing comfortable clothing and trying relaxation techniques can help with feeling panicked during an MRI. Talk to your doctor about medication for anxiety and claustrophobia, if needed.
Mayfair Diagnostics offers MRI imaging as a private pay service at our Mayfair Place location in Calgary, and as both public and private pay exams at our Saskatoon and Regina locations in Saskatchewan. For more information, please visit our services page or call our toll-free number 1-866-611-2665.
