THYROID SCAN MEDICATION LIST
You will need to stop taking several medications prior to the Thyroid Scan. Below is a list of the medications and the length of time you will need to stop taking them prior to your exam. Please consult your doctor before stopping any medication.
Thyroid Medications
Two weeks prior:
- Liothyronine (Cytomel, Thyrolar)
- Tapazole (Methimazole)
- Thyroxine (Synthroid, Levothyroid, Levoxyl)
Iodide-Containing Drugs
Two weeks prior:
- Amiodarone (Cordarone), benziodarone
- Echothiopate iodide (ophthalmic)
- Expectorants – Calcidrine Syrup (CaI2), iodinated glycerol, hydriodic acid syrup
- Iodoquinol (Diodoquin) (amebicide)
- Isopropamide iodide (anticholinergic)
- SSKI, Lugol’s solution
- Vitamin and mineral products
Topical Iodide Products
1-9 months prior:
- Iodochlorhydroxyquin (Clioquinol)
Two weeks prior:
- Iodine tincture
- Iodoform gauze
- Povidone iodine
Other Drugs
Two weeks prior:
- ACTH (Cortrosyn, Synacthen Depot)
- Adrenal and gonadal steroids
- Sulfonamides (Septra [DS], Apo-Sulfatrim, Novo-Trimel [DS] , Nu-Cotrimox, Coptin, Pediazole)
One week prior:
- Phenylbutazone (apo-Phenylbutazone)
X-ray or CT Dye (Contrast Media)
- Lipiodol, Ethiodol (Fougera): 1 year or more
- Cholografin Meglumine (Bracco): 3 months
- Telepaque (Nycomed): 2 months
- Hypaque Meglumine, Hypaque Sodium (Winthrop): 4 weeks
